#KWENTONGISKWAD: Meet the ‘GFs’

“Reaching their own stars they soar
In angel wings higher they go.
Through the glossy papers,
you see six non-identicals chained tightly”

These touching lines were a part of a poem made by Vira Diego dedicated to her iskwad. She said that she was inspired by their usual poses on their photos; slinging their arms over their shoulders while carrying their big bright smiles.

It was during their high school days when these classmates, Vira, Bethany, Kim, Des, Princess, and Gia made their unexpected bond through Twitter. Twitter became their pub, the group’s safe haven. With the sprouting friendship made on Twitter, a photo of them posing with their identical braids made by Des sparked much commonality which eventually turned into something that these girls are clueless to have changed their lives.

From those silly photos, these girls started to accompany each other on lunch and snack breaks, special celebrations, studies, and chats. “Yung pagkaka pare-pareho ng pusod (braid/hair tie) namin, planado yun para sa picture pero hindi namin inaasahan na ‘yung simpleng pagkkapareho ng pusod naming anim, magreresulta sa isang napakatatag na friendship. Simula noon, hindi na kami mapaghiwalay na anim” Vira explained.

They originally called their group Gandas and Gwapo, as John Carlo, one of their classmate became part of their group. According to Princess, “Nagkaroon kasi ng GC (Group Chat) na kaming puro babae lang kaya nawala yung gwapo puro girls” which then eventually bear their current ‘iskwad’ name: GFs or Girl Friends.

Their bond was challenged when college arrived. All of them studied to various schools which resulted to lesser meets and bondings. They resorted to social media as their way to connect and catch up with each other. Whenever they have free times, GFs usually have sleepovers filling their nights with laughter and cherished moments. “Dati nagmo-movies pero ngayon halos chikahan na lang pag nagkikita” Bethany shared.

Since 2016, they have created their special tradition to celebrate Christmas and New Year together. Complete with DIY decorations, props, and thoughtful gifts, GFs celebrated these occasions much special and uniquely theirs. They also made a pact that everyone must have a relationship before someone have their wedding. They group also planned to be future neighbors.

Even if they are currently in different paths, GFs continued to stand still, even made their group stronger. They see their group in the future doing the same things as what they do now, cherishing wonderful moments together and being each other’s strengths. Like the lyrics of their theme song, Let It Go, these girls will don’t care what others are going to say, because everyone had each other’s backs. Vira believed, “High School friends will always last the longest, and our friendship is one strong evidence to it”
