#KWENTONGISKWAD: SQUIDS AHOY!

When I think of them, I see us walking down the streets after finishing the last day of our third year.  We had just had our last exam of the year and we decided to do something. At the time, we weren’t sure what that something was. Whether it was to watch a movie, play some games or just walk around with no destination or care in the world. The heat of the sun didn’t bother us for it was finally summer. The warm breezes smelled of smoke and freedom as we walk down streets only some of us were familiar with. The pure spontaneity of the moment rid us of the chains that were the reason of multiple cancelled plans over the school year. Had it been not mentioned but we felt free for the first time in a long time. I remember the day in its orange-tinted entirety, but, alas, my memory could never do it justice.

When I think of them, I see myself watching the car window as we all try to get home from a particularly eventful birthday dinner. The illuminating streetlights had already blurred into one long spectrum of light and the air with thick with concern and worry for ourselves and for each other.  Exhausted was an understatement after that evening and we had all become a little bit irritated with one another. We were already to get home and rest but not until every one of us had gone home. Despite the irritation and overall exhaustion from that night, the memory of that simple dinner, movie—and all the antics that happened in between—prevailed.

When I think of them, I see every photoshoot, every opportunity that we will have and have had in the past few years to express the creativity we all possess. I see every terrible moment and the terrible people who were involved and how we manage to rise above and become better. I see every success, big or small, and the celebrations we have because it’s not often we get to win in life. I see the drama and seriousness, the maturity and capability all while realizing that in a few years we’d look back and say, ‘That wasn’t so bad.’.

There isn’t one memory that speaks to me and says ‘Yes, this is what Squid is.’. Personally, its every moment, every interaction, every get together that we have had so far that makes me realize how incredible these people are. They radiate beauty and inspiration. They are unapologetic of who they are. They are hilarious and witty. They are youthful. They are unstoppable. There are a lot of words to describe them, a lot of things to compare them to but I don’t think comparing them or describing them to anything will do justice to who they really are.
